At what age/size are most babies ready to trade rear-facing infant car seat for next car seat?

I'm wondering if I'll be able to use my first baby's car seat for her new sibling.

My son was in the convertible seat (still rear-facing) when he was 9 months old. We started thinking about a convertible seat for him when he was about 7 months old. Even though his infant seat was rated up to 30 pounds, and he wasn’t close to that, he was just too snug in the infant seat. It was a struggle to get him in it.

We’ll definitely be using the infant car seat for the next baby!

The law in the majority of states is BOTH a year and over 20 lbs. However, it is recommended to keep your toddler rear facing until the limit of 35 lbs.

20 pounds AND one year. It has to do with the strength of the neck muscles as well as the size of the baby.

  4. Miss says:

They aren’t supposed to be front facing until they are at least 1 year and at least 20 lbs. But the longer they stay rear facing the safer it is.

I live in TN and our state law says a baby must be a year old and twenty pounds before they can face forward

ITs 12 months and at least 20lbs. MY DR also told me that good head control is a good thing also.

I know you know the answer to your question now… but yes in washington state the law is also 20 Lbs & 1 year old.

Here in CO it’s 20 pounds and at least 1 year of age.

A baby never has to be in an infant seat. Convertible seats (ones that face rear for infants and forward for toddlers) support 5-40 pounds. You shouldn’t have any problem moving an older baby into a bigger seat and using the infant one for a new baby.

Babies/children should be rear facing for as long as possible..

Just because the law says a child can turn forward facing at 1 year/20lbs doesn’t mean they should from a safety standpoint.

When you move from an infant seat choose a car seat that has the highest rear facing max (most are 35lbs).

A baby can face forward in a car seat when he/she is at least one year old and weighs at least 20 lbs. I have a car seat that can be used front facing and rear facing. My son is still in the rear facing position b/c he is under 1 year old. These convertable seats are great. You can use them from birth and on. I started with just a rear facing seat, but the convertable one is awesome. Once my son is a year I can just turn it around. He is over 20 lbs now so as long as he doesn’t lose any weight. You can get the convertable car seats anywhere. Graco makes the one I use. Also your local WIC office carries them! Hope this helps!

It depends on your car seat’s weight limit. Mine was 22lbs.

We switched to a rear facing convertible seat that is good for 20lbs and up. I will keep her rear facing until she is 2, or when she hits the weight/length limit.

My best friend didn’t take her son outta his until he was a year old and was 20 lbs. but it does depend on the size of the baby! but either way consult your child’s doctor. and make sure the seat is a good brand and is installed properly. some stores do it for u or can tell u the best way.

Law states clearly it is one year old AND 20 pounds- not "or" before they can go front facing.
