Convertible car seat help?

We are interested in moving our 5 month old son out of his infant car seat (which is part of a travel system) and into something more roomy and comfortable. I have heard Britax is one of the best brands out there, but which model is best? And what is the difference really between all of them? Also, my friend has one, I think the Boulevard model, and it seems really big! It's super tall, and as of now our son will still be rear-facing, so then there's no way we can turn around and peek over the top of the seat at him? Any other convertible car seats with a better shape/size? Thanks :]

We went with the Evenflo Triumph. Safety wise it’s rated just as high as the Britax seats. It’s super comfy for our son, and it even fits in the back of my husband’s VW Jetta.

It was less than 1/2 the price of the Britax as well. Plus I found it very easy to adjust the straps to fit snuggly.

Okay, all car seats have to adhere to certain standards in order to be sold in the US. Basically Britax is the luxury brand of car seat. They are more plush and have nicer extras, but a $100 car seat should perform just as well. I’ve heard from others that the Britax’s are bulky and heavy, not one to be moved from car to car. I personally am getting the Safety 1st car seat that’s only about $100, and has the look and comfort of the Britax at less then half the price. I’ve read reviews that owners of Britax’s who’ve used the Safety 1st as their portable car seat or second car seat, have thought it very comparable and have really liked it.

I say xray is right on. the only thing I would add to that is that it has to be easy for you too. you know, to use.

    I’ve switched a few out..my son is about 18mo

Xray is not right on – it really depends on a lot of things. Ideally the car seat should be easy to use for you so that it gets used, other then that you might want to think about economy. The great thing about Britax is that their seats can be used for much longer as their weight and height limits are higher. What this means is that you won’t be purchasing another seat for some time, and in some ways that might save you some $.

Another thing to think about is the child’s ability to get out of the seat. Some 1 year olds can undo the buckles of some seats that are easy for parents to use, I know – I have a 14 month old that can get out of his Evenflo Triumph. So we are bumping him up to a Britax Marathon because his older brother cannot operate the buckles on his.

It’s up to you to look at the seats on a showroom and decide what fits your needs best, all the seats are rated to a certain standard and you need to feel comfortable using whatever seat you get so I suggest you physically go and look.
