I think the answer varies depending on your lifestyle. Do you live in the suburbs or the city? Do you/your partner/family/nanny switch cars often or will you always use the same car to drive your baby?
We live in the suburbs and drive everywhere but my husband and I have different cars, so I bought a Graco SafeSeat (now being re-named the Snugride 32, which lasts your baby up to 32" long or 30 pounds) because:
-Infant seats allow sleeping babies to remain undisturbed as you go about your errands.
- Infant seats provide a safe place for your baby even when you leave your car.
- The sunshade on infant seats are invaluable in sunny locales.
- Extra bases means your infant seat can be used in multiple cars (and bases are MUCH cheaper than multiple carseats and faster to use than installing/uninstalling a convertible seat).
- The portability of infant seats comes in handy during cold winters/hot summers as the seats don’t have to be left in extreme temperatures (hot seat belt buckels–OUCH!).

When you grow out of the infant seat and move to a convertible, you miss some of these features. I hated waking a sleeping baby, but also hated sitting in the car for 2 hours…
An infant seat is great to have in the beginning, because you can just tote the baby around in the seat without waking him or her up.
for money saving reasons, buy a convertible seat vs. infant car seat. by the time you buy the xtra bases for the different cars, etc., you’re spending a fortune.
combi is great for cost-savings but i can’t stand my combi infant car seat. i think it’s because its a european design because it’s soooo slender. my baby is 18 lbs. (8 months) and is struggling with space to move.
convertible seats are usually larger with plenty of space and they can be placed forward or backward facing. con: transferring the child is not an option since you can’t place it in the stroller…though you could adjust your child to get used to being transferred straight into the stroller without the car seat.
Infant car seat. My daughter loved that thing. She even slept in it, inside her crib for the first 4 months. She loved the closeness of the material and sleeping upright. The Dr said it was fine. It was a life saver AND it just fits perfect on a shopping cart.
I loved having a bucket carseat, so when the baby was sleeping, you didn’t have to disturb them. It’s also a place for the baby to sit, when they’re to young to sit in a highchair, while out to eat. I also think it would be a pain to get a newborn in and out of a convertible carseat, because you have to do it from the side.
That being said, I just switched my almost 7 month old to a convertible. Not because of size, she’s only 16.5lbs, and 25.5in, but more of convenience. Even at 16lbs, she was getting heavy to be carried in a bucket seat. Not to mention she really didn’t like being in it anymore. She also looks super comfortable in her new carseat. I have a Britax Boulevard, it’s super cute, and she’s well protected.
If you have the extra money, I would say go with both. I loved the convenience of the in and out, of a bucket when she was really young. I also plan on keeping her rear facing, till she no longers fits, so I would have ended up with a convertible sooner or later anyway.
Initially, I thought a convertible car seat was the answer because we would save money. That was before the baby came.
I don’t know what I would have done without an infant seat- for many reason. Not only can you carry the baby in the car sear, that means that if they are sleeping, you don’t have to wake up. It also serves an a great place to put baby in when you are out, besides your arms- if you don’t have a stroller with you.
In our case, it served as his "crib" for a few weeks- he had severe acid reflux and could be laid down at all after he ate. He didn’t have for the month he was in the hospital- or the first week he was home. Then is struck severely. We ordered a special wedge for him to be strapped to, but it didn’t arrive for 10 days or so- so our DR recommended his carseat at night until that arrived- which I know you shouldn’t do long term, but it was our only option in our case.
We ended up switching to a convertible at about 10 months.
I would definitely reccomend an infant seat for starts- it’s like their own little cozy nest.
I looked around for a long time before deciding on a car seat for my child! I found one from Graco its called the snugride 32! It holds your baby up to 32 lbs! Great buy! And its rear-facing so when you baby turns one and is still under 32 lbs it will hold him or her! They also have great patterens, and they are not the most expensive car seats! Overall I think that they are a great buy!
Good Luck!
Infant car seats are great to begin with. You can easily transport the baby without waking him/her up. They also make a nice little seat to place the baby in when you need to sit them down in the house or when visiting others. The downside is the baby outgrows them within a few months. If money is an issue you can skip it and go straight to a convertible seat. Convertible seats are really nice, and last much much longer, but they don’t have the option to use as a carrier. We always buy an infant seat to begin with and then switch to a convertible seat whenever it just becomes too hard to carry the baby in the infant seat, or when the baby outgrows the seat. My son is almost 6 months old and we switched him to a convertible seat last week. He loves it, but I am still glad that we had the infant seat first. It was a real lifesaver those first few months.
depends on the age. before a year I prefer the regular infant seat and once they are a year old I like the rear facing convertible car seat.
I have these car seats for my four girls
