How long did your baby stay in a Infant rear facing car seat?
I am wondering how long did your baby stay in the rear facing car seat. Was it a certain age or weight or both?
My daughter is only 3 months old, so she will be in her carseat for a while longer.
I have Graco Snug Ride.

They are suppose to stay in a rear-facing seat until they are 22 pounds.
My oldest was 10 months old and we turned her around. We had gotten a new car and her carseat didn’t really work very well rear-facing, so we turned her around.
My youngest was turned around maybe a month ago now. She’s 16 months. We waited until she was the right weight to turn her around, plus we needed to get her a carseat.
1 year or 20 lbs. The longer the better though. Read the seat guides for the brand you have.
Legally they cannot change until 20 pounds AND 1 year. Its development AND weight- not weight alone, or length or anything. Its age (development) and weight.
My son stayed rear facing until he was a year.
They say if you can rear face to two years its even better- but that requires a rear facing convertible that can handle a larger baby.
I stopped using it when my son was around 9 months. He still fit in it but it just got too heavy for me to carry! I wish I could have gone longer! Life was so much easier when he was in his infant car seat but I just couldn’t! My arm would have fell off!
Once I switched him to the Britax car seat, I installed it REAR facing until he was a year old.
my son is out of the infant and into the toddler seat but it is still rear facing he is 11months and will stay rear facing until he is a year old
I would highly recommend keeping your baby in rear facing as long as you can!! I was in a very, very bad car accident a year ago when my son was only 5 weeks old. He was properly belted up in his rear facing infant seat and when I came out bruised and banged up (thought i wouldnt make it) he came out without a scratch! My car was completely totaled (thanks to a drunk driver) and we were told they couldnt believe we both made it out alive.
After the accident, I was PARANOID about having proper carseats installed in my car for my children. I did all the research I could and turns out rear facing is SAFEST for children and some carseats could be rear facing for up to 40lbs! If a child is forward facing, during an impact their heads get jerked forward which could snap their necks. If they are rear facing, the carseat is cradling their entire body that the accident wont even phase them. I bought my son the Bertini infant carseat which was highly rated and is for infants up until 35lbs. I plan keeping him rear facing as long as possible.
There’s some great videos on youtube which shows you crash tests with rear facing and forward facing carseats.
Wow, all of these answers are so interesting.. the guidelines in Australia say turn them around at 6 months old!!!
**********I think Australia needs to review the safety aspect of their carseat rules!!!!!!*******
I had my three all turned around by 6 months…
My son was a chunker so he was over the weight limit by 5 month..my daughter stayed in the infant seat until she was 9 months.
In an infant seat, usually less than 6 mos. Rear facing in a convertible seat, usually 18 mos to 2 years.
My son is 13 months old and about 25 lbs. He is still in his infant carrier (have a chicco keyfit 30, which goes up to 30 lbs) and rear facing. I bought a britax marathon cs a month ago and when i get to installing it, it will still be rear facing until my little one is 40 lbs. after that, i’ll switch him to forward facing.
My daughter was in her infant seat rear facing until she was about 16 months and 20 pounds. Then we got her a convertible car seat and she remained rear facing until she was 23 months. I turned her forward facing when we took a 6 hour car trip. She hates the car, and I thought being able to see out the window better would make it more bearable for her. Of course she loves facing forward, so I haven’t had the heart to turn her backward again.
You have to make sure you know the laws! My little girl was 1, she loved facing forward and getting to see us all the time!!
