They sell things you can buy to level the car seat pretty much the same way a towel does so I am sure using a towel is okay but over time the towel will squish down and the seat will not be level anymore. I would go with something like this instead.

here is a link from babycenter on installing a car seat. They say "If your baby’s head flops forward, you can make the seat more level and comfortable by wedging a folded towel, blanket, or other firm support under the front of it."

I doubt it, but who is going to be inspecting yours?
And why isn’t it level-able on its own?

We were told by the hospital that it was fine.

Lots of mommies do it. I could have sworn I read this suggestion in my car seat’s instruction manual too…I think it’s fine though. In many cases, it makes the seat more secure.

This does not sound like a good idea to me, because the seat should be securely connected to the car and belt system, and adding extra loose pieces (like towels) might get in the way of those safety mechanisms. Maybe instead of leveling the whole car seat, tuck a blanket under your infant so that they’re sitting in the desired position (but make sure they’re still under the seatbelt.

in our manual for our car seat it says to roll up a towel to make it level. if you have questions you can go to your local fire department and they can check everything out there for you and tell you what you can do to make it level. hope this helps. good luck!

Yes, you can use a tightly rolled towel or a pool noodle. For pool noodles, you may use up to three stacked like a pyramid and taped together. I’m one of the people who inspect carseats, and yes, we recommend this when you cannot get the appropriate recline without them. If you are unsure of your install, go to http://www.seatcheck.org to find a certified tech near you who can check it for you.
