Question about car seats…?
My son will be 5 months old this month and weighs 18 lbs 9 ozs and is 26 1/2 inches long. He is getting close to the maximum weight limit on his infant carrier which is 22 lbs. The Graco Snugride 32 has a weight limit of 32 lbs and 32 inches. I want to keep him in the infant carrier because he obviously cannot sit up freely yet and it would be easier when going to the grocery store and things to have him in the carrier.
I am told his weight gain will definitely slow down so I am thinking about buying the Snugride. I am just wondering if this is a good investment. I couldn't find any infant carriers with a slightly higher weight limit.
Any opinions and suggestions would be great.

I wouldn’t waste money on that. He’ll be far too heavy for the seat and for you to carry. He doesn’t need to be able to sit freely to sit in a cart–he’ll be strapped in, plus it has a back and a front for him to rest against. Get a convertible seat.
I would definitely hold off. Your little man may be sitting up freely before he actually hits that weight limit. I hand the same concerns and just held out for as long as I safely could. I since have purchased a Britax Roundabout 50 convertible and my little man can sit up by himself in the carts. He likes that much better than being in his carrier. Your little man will be sitting up before you know it and you really don’t want to waste money on an additional car seat when you don’t need to.
I didn’t even bother with the snug-ride. I switched to a convertible car seat that can stay in the rear facing position for up to 30 lbs. I kept the infant seat in my trunk. I switched my son to it to go in the store or what ever until he could sit in a buggy.
I don’t think it would be. There is no way of knowing if his weight gain is going to slow down. My sons has just picked up. In a month he has gained almost 4lbs! I would get a convertible. They are fine for a 5 month old. They are ment for babies much younger to sit in them. Usually they are good from birth up.
ETA: We just had to get a convertible. My son has been on the small side since birth but his month he has been packing on the pounds. It does make it easier but in the long run I think it might be a waste of money. To us it was. I wish we had gotten the convertible from day one. We know with the next we will be using the convertible right away.
ETA2: These are the two that we have in my car and my husbands:

His weight will definitely slow. My son is a year old and has been stuck at 20-21 pounds for a couple months now. It especially slows once they start moving around and walking. Use your infant carrier for awhile longer, then get a carseat that will accomodate him for a couple of years!
I wouldn’t bother looking for another infant carrier. My son was 19lb when I switched him to the Graco Comfortsport convertible seat from the Graco snugride. But he was 10.5 months old, so he could sit up freely. However, the graco comfortsport is reclined when in rear-facing position, so your child could sit in the seat and be fine, just make sure you keep him rear-facing to at least a year of age.
On a side note, my husband has the Britax Marathon convertible seat, and it does have a recline bar, but it doesnt recline as much as my Graco convertible seat, so make sure to look at the recline on the seat so that your son doesn’t fall forward in it.
My daughter is a little older and can sit fine, but we just moved to the My ride 65 by graco, it is a convertible car seat, it is meant for infants from 6lbs to 65lbs, It is reasonably priced at about $170, and I even used coupons from babies r us.
It was rated with 4 stars from NHTSA and is made in the USA, I did a lot of research and you can beat this.
I was going to go with Britax convertible also made in the USA, but they are pretty expensive.
The convertible car seats are for infants to toddlers, so it will last.
While his weight gain MAY slow down, it’s not promised. I would invest in a convertible car seat, he’ll be using that for much longer. Until he can sit up either carry him in a sling, bunch some blankets around him in the cart, use a stroller, or just put the infant carrier in the trunk of the car and use it while going into the store. He’ll probably be sitting up within the next three months anyway.
I would get a convertible car seat. I think it would be a waste of money to get another infant carrier, when he will only use it for another handful of months. With a convertible he will be in it until he is about 4+. Some the weight limits go up to 65lbs. I think this would be a better investment.
Another thing to point out about the Sugride 32 is that it’s bigger and heavier. You’re talking about using it like at the grocery store, well the 32 won’t fit in the front (upper) part of the shopping cart – you’ll have to keep it in the main basket area. Also, are you really going to be comfortable carrying a 20 pound child in a heavy carrier?
Infant carriers are great (IMO) b/c you can take them in and out of the car with the baby still in it. But as the baby gets bigger, you’re not going to want to haul the additional weight so you wind up taking just the child and not the carrier too. So I agree with others, hold off on another seat and make that new seat a convertable to last the next few years.
If I were you I would buy a convertible car seat that you can keep rear facing until a year old. Then just switch it around when she is big enough to be front facing
